ABSTRACT
To be successful nonviolence had to be a matter of principle and not merely a technique; it had to be adhered to even under the most extreme provocation. It implied a degree of self-control which, even Gandhi admitted, could only be expected from a few. The majority might accept it only out of necessity. What was essential, in Gandhi's view, was that the leadership be committed to the principle.
