ABSTRACT

One of the first acts of the Reformation under Edward VI was the issuance of Twelve Homilies by the Council of Regency. The homily "Of the Salvation of All Mankind" has been described as one of the finest pieces of theological writing in the English language. "A Fruitful Exhortation to the Reading and Knowledge of Holy Scripture" is a clear presentation of one of the dominant themes of the English Reformation, which made the Bible the book of the common man. The homilies on faith and good works are unusually perceptive statements of the basic doctrines of the Reformation. Unto a Christian man there can be nothing either more necessary or profitable, than the knowledge of holy scripture, forasmuch as in it is contained God's true word, setting forth his glory, and also man's duty.
