ABSTRACT
Immediately the party moved to consolidate and centralize power, destroy alternative sources of opposition, and make communist authority supreme throughout the land. At least acceptance, i f not outright loyalty, had to be assured, especially among the mass of peasants. With actual or potential resistance thus liquidated, outright nationalization, collectivization, and forced industrialization could then be undertaken and eventually, true communism achieved-or so the party leaders thought.
