ABSTRACT
To understand how musical learning goes on in formal as well as informal contexts it is imperative to pay attention to its societal and cultural conditions. Sociological theories of modernity can contribute to such insights by describing and analysing the contemporary condition of society and culture in terms of information overflow, extreme dynamism, complex values and globalization, to mention just some of its traits.
