Review of past and existing monitoring projects Information was gathered for this paper using questionnaires sent to those involved in past or current monitoring projects; the list of sites (for questionnaire survey) was

compiled through peer discussion and from published sources and past reviews (e.g. Lillie and Smith, 2009). Where there was no response or where no one involved was available, the information was gained from published sources. The following questions were asked in the questionnaire to provide comparable information about each site.
