ABSTRACT

A trade peculiar to the East is the conveyance of Deck Passengers on ocean voyages and large numbers are conveyed in this manner between Singapore and both China and India, also to neighbouring ports, the larger ships carrying two to three thousand each. Further, Pilgrims to Mecca travel as Deck Passengers, and about 12,000 of them embark or disembark at the Board’s Wharves annually. When embarking they take with them provisions su cient for their requirements during the whole journey.
