ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses several before-and-after examples of making pictures by controlling available light and by using a speedlite—at home and when travelling. When using a reflector, think about the mood people want to create by adding light: Gold side for a warm and pleasing image effect, silver for perhaps a more natural one. A speedlite is another wonderful accessory for controlling the light. A special speedlite called a ringlight can be used for enhanced close-up photographs. Polarizing filters also let people control light, by darkening the sky, making clouds appear brighter. They also reduce reflection on water, ice, glass and foliage. Painting with light is another way to control the light. Changing photographers' position is another way to control the light. This technique is beneficial in high contrast situations when photographers want to reduce the contrast range in a scene.
