ABSTRACT

Getting a good exposure is a big part of making a good photograph. Good composition is another. The chapter shares most important composition techniques, illustrated with some of the author's favorite photographs from the authors 2017 Route 66 road trip. A photograph is really a window into a scene. Framing a scene through a window can make for a very interesting and dynamic photograph. Composing in layers also adds a sense of depth to an image. This photograph has three layers: Fountain, seating area and rear wall. Imagine a tic-tac-toe grid over a photograph and place the main subject, the man's head in this case, where the lines intersect. Tilting wide-angle lenses creates distortion, which can easily be fixed in Photoshop and Lightroom. That being said, embrace distortion, it can help to create a cool-looking image.
