ABSTRACT

This chapter explores both metering and exposure modes using the author photographs and graphics supplied by Canon. The evaluative metering mode is the default metering modes on most cameras. Exposure is determined by reading the light over the entire frame, but is on the area surrounding the focus point. The spot metering mode bases the exposure on a small part of the frame which people can place in different positions within the viewfinder on most cameras. The fast shutter speed is needed because camera shake is exaggerated at close distances. The camera is set to a slow shutter speed so when people pan the subject is relatively sharp and the background is blurred to add a scene of speed and motion to a photograph. The camera selects a relatively slow shutter speed allowing some of the available light to enter the camera and the in-camera flash pops up to illuminate the subject.
