ABSTRACT

Dye house effluent from various industries discharges different kinds of toxic pollutants and contributes to water pollution. Textile mills are in the forefront in fresh water consumption and this chapter will discuss the use of techniques that can reduce organic disposal. The recovery of dye from salt is a desirable aspect because it enables reuse of both dye and water. This chapter largely focuses on the evolution of pressure driven membrane processes for effluent treatment in the textile sector. For various kinds of dyes, the challenges faced by membrane materials are discussed in terms of fouling and its consequences on durability. The shift to advanced surface coating techniques to confer highly selective separation skins to the membranes is a positive advancement in analytical separations and industrial effluent treatment. This aspect will be brought forward with detailed sketches on surface coating techniques. Special emphasis will be given to the layer-by-layer method and its contribution to enhancing membrane properties. The chapter will also include property enhancement conferred by the introduction of nanoparticles.
