ABSTRACT
The last 30 years has seen the enormous growth of the extraction of oil and gas from below the continental shelf. In 1986, 24% of crude oil production was offshore and it has been estimated that 40% of the total world's undiscovered oil is also offshore so that it is inevitable that, as known reserves are depleted, attention will move to these resources.
