ABSTRACT

This chapter presents ideas to create and maintain a reflexive and deliberate practice. Curiosity and critical thinking are central characteristics of a narrative approach. Central to a narrative approach to youth work is being reflexive while in conversation. Reflexive and deliberate practice extends the curiosity and critical questioning that are cornerstones of a narrative approach beyond the borders of our engagements with young people. Deliberate practice is just that: an intentional exercise and application of particular skills, done with careful attention and repetitive rehearsal. Deliberate practice involves four characteristics. First, deliberate practice is a method for achieving self-improvement. The second characteristic is repetitive practice. Third, this intentional, repetitive practice is followed by immediate feedback by someone who is knowledgeable and skilled in the area being practiced. Finally, deliberate practice requires effort, concentration, and motivation.
