ABSTRACT
The concert recordings bring large choirs and philharmonic orchestra sizes to supplement the rich sound of the music something about 'One Day More' makes us feel goosebumps. The musical repeatedly uses themes and ideas: sometimes through small rhythmic sequence of beats or notes; sometimes through reprises of songs or the underlying music with new lyrics. Essentially, reprises help prepare the emotional wringers that musicals like to put us through: perhaps the best example of this is the 'Tonight' Quintet in West Side Story. Les Miserables is built on small building blocks of music that are constantly reprised, helping us navigate the epic scale (and length) of the story and the musical as a whole. Les Miserables is fairly unusual in the way in which multiple characters use the same music sometimes for different reasons. The musical score of Les Miserables sweeps people up and helps them understand the complex interwoven stories.
