ABSTRACT

If musical theatre has moved on to a new phenomenon in Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton, Les Miserables continues to play to theatres around the world. In fact, Hamilton owes a great deal to Les Miserables. Lin-Manuel Miranda's love for the musical is evident in the structure, sound, and dramatic intensity of Hamilton. There is no one answer to why people love this show. Individuals love Les Miserables for all different kinds of reasons, and plenty of people eventually go on to fall out of love with it or move on to other musicals. Perhaps Hamilton will come, in time, to occupy a similar space for us, and for a musical that is basically impossible to get tickets for at this point, we need to remember that the connection with musicals does not necessarily revolve around actually getting to see it in the theatre.
