ABSTRACT

This chapter introduction is written from our perspectives as community-based researchers using participatory approaches in various settings in Australia and elsewhere. Erin locates herself as a white Canadian-Australian woman and migrant living on the unceded territories of the Kulin Nation in Melbourne. Her background combines critical social work, community-based participatory research and policy advocacy primarily on issues related to gender equality and violence against women. Erin has recently completed a Master’s thesis focusing on the ethics of action and social change in participatory research. Cathy is a white, middle-class, public health practitioner who does not have lived experience of disability. She has a PhD in social psychology, and has worked with non-government organisations in various settings in Australia, Asia and the Pacific. She is now university-based, working primarily with immigrant and refugee women, women with disabilities, and community-based organisations to conduct research on reducing health inequalities.
