ABSTRACT

Theoretical underpinnings of participatory research (PR) emphasise some degree of co-production of research and an action orientation. The co-production of knowledge is underpinned by values about equality of knowledges, meaning that there is a particular interest in ensuring that insider or emic knowledge held within communities is acknowledged, respected and made explicit in the research process. The intended outcome is to produce an authentic and comprehensive account of problems/issues from all perspectives and, with that, appropriate solutions to bring about concrete actions and change.
