ABSTRACT

The concept of sustainable development was first introduced in 1988 in the Brundtland report emphasizing the need to not only consider economic factors when trying to achieve sustainable development but also social and environmental aspects. Though new and attractive, the concept was somewhat abstract and difficult to translate into operational criteria. The introduction of 17 specific Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by the United Nations in 2015 has changed this and is providing well defined goals presenting a challenge to both the policy and research arena. At least five of the seventeen SDG’s have a direct relation with soils (Table 1).
