ABSTRACT

The chapter focuses on the critical disability aspect of attitudes towards disability to consider how parasport events can be leveraged more effectively. One of the most significant factors or barriers in community participation is social attitudes and awareness. Drawing upon the survey employed at both Games with volunteers and spectators, this chapter presents the results regarding the perceived impact of the parasport events. It appears that both the integrated and the non-integrated event had minimal impact of attitudes towards disability and awareness about parasport. It is encouraging to note the areas where events might present greater opportunities to focus on positive attitude change. Notably, the non-integrated event seemed to have more of an impact on overall attitude and awareness, suggesting that the model of events needs to be carefully considered in the context of event leverage to shift community level perceptions of persons with disabilities.
