ABSTRACT

This chapter offers Counselors in Training (CITs) an in-depth coverage of the purpose of on-going assessment and the gift it offers of competency. It considers how building on CITs prior work experiences can help solidify and build competency and self-efficacy as well. The CIT who can respect high standards in themselves, yet allow for errors to be growth opportunities, will project that to clients, and, thus, be more effective as a clinician. Ultimately, letting go of control, of knowing everything, of perfectionism, and of unrelenting standards allows CIT to reach a new level of freedom in CITs education and growth. The PAIR Model presents a lifelong opportunity to become and sustain the identity of a mature professional. The PAIR feedback model includes: preparation for hearing feedback, actually hearing the feedback, implementing the feedback, and reforming in response to the feedback.
