ABSTRACT

Prediction is inherent in fashion design: paradoxically, the industry seems to have been caught out by developments in both customer concern and awareness of ethical issues. The ability to recognise ethics futures is a key skill. It can mean watching a current event or practice and scenario building further; about how that would impact on the fashion supply chain. As ethics become perceived as fundamental to futuring for the industry, more examples of best practice will emerge. There have been designers, companies and organisations that have led both with their hearts and their heads and evolved models of best practice. Legislation around fashion manufacture is changing. The theory of sentience and consciousness is of importance in futuring, not only as an example of an area of potential legislation, but as a unique topic that has been gathering momentum over recent years.
