ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book analyses Owen's preaching from 1646 to 59 within its historical context, arguing that it is best described as a form of prophetic preaching. It discusses the eschatological framework which informed Owen's prophetic worldview. The book explains how Owen used his eschatological framework to interpret what he had identified to be providentially significant events during the Civil War and Interregnum. It considers the obligations Owen lay upon his hearers and readers to 'improve' such providential mercies. The book examines the response which Owen required of magistrates to the providentially significant events the nation had witnessed. It focuses on the third characteristic of prophetic preaching, namely Owen's persistent warnings of the threat of judgment to a nation which he believed had been consistently negligent in its response.
