ABSTRACT

In this chapter we develop a criterion of adequacy for models of logical judgment that may allow us to choose between deduction models that produce the same set of derivations. This new criterion is called explanatory adequacy because it is analogous to Chomsky’s (1964, 1965a, b, 1966) notion of explanatory adequacy in linguistics. The analogy is pursued in Section 8.9. The new criterion rests upon the development of adequate theories of reasoning; such a theory will be presented in this chapter and the next. In Chapter 9 as well, we attempt to apply the proposed criterion to Mq.
