ABSTRACT

The nature of learning spaces traditionally referred to as 'classrooms' is undergoing profound change in many countries. This chapter discusses various pedagogical strategies that are applicable to classroom or an innovative learning environment (ILE). The strategies are: employ formative assessment, employ cooperative group teaching, employ peer tutoring, employ cognitive strategy instruction, employ behavioural approaches, employ direct instruction, employ effective feedback, employ assistive technology, and augmentative and alternative communication. Peer tutoring is a powerful tool for increasing the overall effectiveness of teaching in inclusive classrooms. Properly handled, peer tutoring brings benefits to: tutees, tutors, and educators. Employing behavioural approaches involve a teacher selecting from various combinations of the following behaviours: controlling antecedents and controlling consequences. The purposes of effective feedback are to motivate learners, to inform them how well they have done and to show them how they can improve.
