ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 starts with an overview of Halliday’s (1975) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) concepts and focuses on one aspect of SFL – the Cohesive Harmony Index (CHI). In this chapter, we consider the notion of coherence and cohesion. For example, if you are examining teacher talk, using SFL elements can help identify the cohesiveness and coherence elements. The chapter shows specifically how Hasan’s (1984) idea of cohesion can be used to analyse talk. Prepare for heavy use of specialised language; however, the technical jargon will be explained.
