ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the nuts and bolts surrounding the first contact and session with a family. The opening moments between therapist and family are crucial as they set the stage for what is to come, and more importantly, the development of the therapeutic relationship. Once the family is in the therapy room and all legal papers have been signed, the therapist then has a decision of how to start the session. The therapeutic relationship can also be viewed within an interactive-performative framework. Joining is usually discussed as one of the first activities a therapist does with a client. Therapists should have generic goals for a first session, regardless of their theoretical orientation. During a first session, therapists need to ensure that all paperwork is filled out, they are attentive to the therapeutic relationship, and they explore the reasons for the client coming to therapy and what services the therapist might offer.
