ABSTRACT

In the context of traumatology, for children who have been abused or exposed to violence, a trauma-informed approach to treatment offers a model that recognizes trauma as the "key to understanding treatment obstacles". In sanctuary, safety is the first pillar and includes physical, psychological, social, and moral safety. By funding Sanctuary training for 29 residential agencies, Pennsylvania demonstrated a commitment to reduce coercive and punitive controls, and co-developer Sandra Bloom began consulting and training child care administrators and staff. Harborcreek Youth Services (HYS) works with 65–70 male residents between ages 10 and 18 who live in four psychiatric residential units and one intensive treatment unit. Beginning in 2007, HYS formed a steering committee to begin the process of changing the culture and adopting the Sanctuary Model. As one of the expressive therapies, music therapy is an effective way to confront trauma.
