ABSTRACT

This chapter illustrates a concept that psychologists call "confirmation bias". It provides an example of teachers who found ways to bring their students into their urban school setting, as well as to visit places outside the immediate surroundings, and the impact that was evident in the children's learning and motivation. The chapter focuses on the role of differences and diversity in the classroom and how environment contribute to children's development. As it explores the impact of poverty and the environment on children's development, elements that support a child's capacity to develop qualities that will buffer them against adversity will be explained in the context of the classroom as well as the broader community. The chapter focuses on specific perspectives that contribute to a fuller understanding of the impact of poverty and the environment on children's learning and development, and how teachers of young children can work together with families and community partners to break the cycle of disadvantage.
