ABSTRACT

Motivation is an internal state that drives behaviour to achieve one’s needs and goals. The Hierarchical Model is a theory that has been developed by different researchers over time creating a complex, but more inclusive explanation of motivation. Intrinsic motivation is the drive to undertake an activity based on our interest, enjoyment and confidence. Unfortunately there are factors which may reduce our intrinsic motivation therefore Cognitive Evaluation Theory seeks to explain what factors help or hinder intrinsic motivation. Both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation leads to engagements with an activity-but for different ends, this is not the case if we are amotivated. In order to enhance the chance of dancers being intrinsically motivated, there are social conditions that must be met that relate to autonomy, relatedness, and competence. Achievement of goals that are intrinsically motivated will lead to pride in our performance, as opposed to the relief of succeeding.
