ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the initial period of the civil war. It traces the impact of foreign intervention on the balance of capabilities and the pattern of warfare during the initial period of the Angolan Civil War. The chapter focuses on the temporal changes that occurred during the first period of the Angolan Civil War. The temporal variation in the foreign intervention permits a longitudinal analysis of its impact on the balance of capabilities and warfare. Corresponding with the three different patterns of foreign intervention, there were also three changes in the balance of capabilities and the type of warfare. These changes in the balance of capabilities led to guerrilla warfare. The chapter presents the comparison of the variation in the pattern of foreign intervention, the balance of capabilities and warfare during these three phases of warfare.
