This dearth of information has contributed to the varying and sometimes contradictory images with which Southern Europe is associated. Geographically, proximity to Africa and the Middle East gives the countries, and particularly their southern extremities, a physical link with the developing world, with all but Portugal (unless one includes Madeira) having territory lying south of Tunis and El Diezair (formerly Algiers).
