ABSTRACT

[Abstract: Homophones are words that are pronounced the same, but spelled differently (e.g. sent, cent, scent). Vice versa, homographs are words that have the same spelling but are pronounced differently (e.g. wind: /wɪnd/ “breeze,” /waɪnd/ “turn”). Many exist in English, because of the lack of a close sound-spelling correspondence. They are much rarer in other languages. They are problems for both native speakers and learners of English because the spelling cannot be deduced from the pronunciation, and vice versa.]
