ABSTRACT

[Abstract: The visual strategy is a last resort; if all else fails, learn the spelling by rote. This strategy is appropriate when the spellings of words (e.g. choir, one) are very irregular and other strategies cannot be used. Mnemonic devices may help. It has been proposed that sets of very useful, very common words should be presented as sight words to be learned visually at different stages of childhood. Such lists devised by Dolch and Fry are examined.]
