ABSTRACT
[Abstract: In an attempt to convince readers how irregular and problematical English spelling is, it is contrasted with Malay spelling. While Malay is spoken over a smaller area, and has used the Roman alphabet for a shorter period than English, the main difference is that Malay spelling has been managed. A national body regulates the spelling. This leads to many advantages of Malay spelling over English spelling, primarily higher literacy rates.]
