ABSTRACT
[Abstract: This speculative chapter contemplates the future of English spelling and punctuation, in particular three trends. Firstly, punctuation trends noted in Chapter 9 may be expected to continue. Secondly, technological changes will take place, but we can only speculate what they might be and what effect they might have on spelling. Recent developments like texting and social media have led to generally briefer communication, with abbreviated spellings and less punctuation. Chapter 29 covered spelling reform and it remains to be seen whether that gathers any steam.]
