ABSTRACT

This chapter presents some closing thoughts discussed in preceding chapters of the book. The book gives readers a statement that will prove useful as they consider their own values and commitments in relationship to current trends in ECE and to look ahead. Of the nations affiliated with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, the US ranks 21st in total investment in ECE relative to country wealth. Program administrators and policymakers must also view teachers and come to appreciate them as possessing valuable knowledge and insights needed to be shared, rather than only as consumers of programs or implementers of new mandates. A significant rethinking of current ECE teacher education curriculum is warranted, with emphasis on policies and practices that value and honor ECE teachers as caring and capable individuals who can have the positive impact on children and their families. All who are concerned about children and the future of humanity must be concerned about the well-being of teachers.
