ABSTRACT

The objective of this chapter was to develop a health and safety (H&S) compliance model for small to medium-sized construction companies in developing countries. The field questionnaire survey was conducted in order to validate findings from the Delphi study with regard to the factors which predict health and safety compliance. The Delphi results have indicated that small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) contractors in Ghana have not realised the significance of their involvement in health and safety compliance. An integrated health and safety compliance model for SME contractors was developed based on the existing health and safety issues, practices and grounded theories. Structural equation modelling (SEM) results indicated that SME contractors had an influence on H&S compliance in the construction industry. Findings from the literature were that more research and effort are required to address the problem of health and safety compliance in small to medium-sized companies in the construction industry.
