ABSTRACT

In a mix, any one element is related to everything else, like the way perspective works in painting. So just like a painter you need to first lay a foundation before you start filling in the details. A foundation should be as permanent as you can make it when you start, but at that time you don’t know the full potential of your mix yet. That’s why a mix requires some planning ahead, so that you can search for a good balance—the right proportions for the main musical elements—without grinding to a frustrating halt or forever running around in circles.
