ABSTRACT

There’s no universal frequency balance that works for every piece of music. In order to judge a frequency balance you must listen to its musical implementations, such as the sense of rhythm, instrument interaction, role division, clarity, space and perspective. Using EQ effectively means developing a vision for the role of each element in the arrangement, and then realizing that vision with the least amount of harm done to the source material. Auditory masking plays a big role in how sounds need to be equalized to be able to coexist in your mix.
