ABSTRACT

The main purpose of the 'Will' phase is simple: to prepare the student to take action. In more eloquent terms, this phase involves 'the construction of an action plan to meet a requirement that has been clearly specified, on ground that has been thoroughly surveyed, using the widest possible choice of building materials'. In one sense, the 'Will' phase of GROW is the most important. Two final steps can be helpful in the 'Will' phase. First, the coach may wish to remind the student of the link between her Action-plan, proximal goal, and ultimate goal. The final step in wrapping up the 'Way Forward' phase is to check the student's commitment to each individual step. Action-plans make use of implementation intentions. Research shows that these are extremely effective in bringing about action. Both student and coach should have a copy of the student's action-plan.
