ABSTRACT
All documents reproduced from manuscript sources are in my own transcription and translation. All documents reproduced from printed sources are in my own translation, with the exception of Documents 8, 10 and 20. My primary consideration when translating was to reproduce the original text as closely as possible, and, since some of the documents were written in a sort of telegraphese, the English version is not always as fluid as it would have been had fluidity of expression been given the top priority. Occasionally, to make the meaning clearer, I have introduced words or phrases which are not to be found in the originals; such words, or phrases, are always given in square brackets.
