ABSTRACT

This chapter describes an early and basic values-based approach. It outlines the development of an overall set of generalizable values statements about what is important to socially focused groups, and the associated indicators, as well as the design of the associated processes, based on participatory, dynamic and emergent mechanisms for generating and then validating shared values. The chapter describes how a list of values statements and a design method were generated out of research through design and grounded theory approaches. It demonstrates the iterative nature of the action research, as the research team continually learned from and alongside participating groups. The proto-indicators as provided were personalized and localized into true indicators which could be measured. The initial work was to generate a new values-based approach, peer-elicited and co-developed with our civil society organization (CSO) consortium partners, which was a complex piece of research in its own right.
