ABSTRACT

This chapter describes a case study of using our values-based approach not only to map the legacies that project groups had initially aspired to, but also, through cross-group collaboration, to make explicit previously vague and intangible legacy aims and measures and to generate additional legacy impact statements. A key finding from our study in this context has been to recognize an explicit conceptualization of legacy in terms of values. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a legacy as 'something left or handed down by a predecessor'. The Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) programme framework had assembled groups whose values overlapped in part with others in the partnership, but also varied. A key finding was that Arts and Humanities approaches are essential in developing a values-based approach to evaluating the legacies of collaborative research projects. 'Impact' is often defined as the demonstrable contribution that research can make to the economy and society.
