ABSTRACT

This exercise is designed for participants to think about key relationships in their lives past and present, ones that have brought them joy and ones that have brought them pain. Also, to consider common roles they play or have played in the past in key relationships, whether, for example, young carer, victim or persecutor, leader or follower. Also, they might consider key people in their life with whom they have felt potent or impotent, insignificant or important, appreciated or used and so on. In heightening awareness of relationship experiences, the exercise may help participants see repeated negative patterns of relating and so to decide to make healthier choices in the future. But it is also a chance to really celebrate the relationships that have been very precious to them and to talk about why. There are several different options that follow of how to use the drawing. Obviously, it’s up to you as facilitator, according to the needs of the participant, whether you choose the exercises or they do.
