ABSTRACT
The Hardanger Fjord is undoubtedly Norway's most beautiful Fjord. A Fjord is a long arm of the sea, that stretches far into the country, bringing the salt water of the North Sea in between mighty mountains and green pasture land. Varaldsoy is an island, that has somewhat the appearance of a pear on the map. In days gone by, beacon lights were lit on its highest peaks whenever the enemy approached, and its glare could often be seen at other times of the year. On the North-western part of the island, a little village may be seen. In this village, a peasant girl, Herborg, lived. It was her duty to attend the cattle on the mountains. This woman had a remarkable dream. She saw in her dream, numerous houses standing on the spot where she generally allowed her cattle to feed.
