ABSTRACT

"Game plan" in a humane helper's context might mean any of the following. It might mean that since her client is presenting "excessive drinking" as an issue, she will use ideas and language from the twelve-step recovery movement in her work with this client. A humane helper learns over time how to do both: co-create a game plan with her client's assistance and update her game plan in the spur of the moment. Inviting homework is not a magic bullet or a gold standard. It is simply a reasonable, human, and humane thing to try with a client with whom it makes sense to try. A helper might build a repertoire of homework assignments that she discover through practice and experience regularly serves people. She might invite, help co-create, or offer very specific assignments that flow from her particular work with a given client and that flow from the guesses she makes as to what might potentially help that client.
