ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on product development with emphasis on design methodology and process. It explains new product development processes and how product innovation happens within companies. The chapter distinguishes between design theory, design methodology, and design process and identifies the major stages associated with design and development of products. It analyzes the various phases of design stage including brief, conceptual, embodiment, and detailed design (DD). The chapter also explains how layout, configuration, parts, topologies, and features are used to create design. It discusses the elements of DD including design for manufacturing (DfM), design for assembly, design for operability, design for maintainability, and design for environment. The chapter outlines the additional tools used in DD including analysis, modeling, simulation, and optimization. It describes Dr. Benjamin Bloom's taxonomy through a case that outlines the design of an enhanced wind turbine and the engineering design steps followed.
