ABSTRACT

Academia is a place of scholarship and the discovery of new knowledge. This chapter talks about schools and colleges of pharmacy, the role of faculty in teaching and research, and the service provided by the academic pharmacy community. It discusses how schools of pharmacy are structured and accredited and how curriculums are developed and assessed. The chapter also discusses what it takes and what it is like to be a pharmacy faculty member. It focuses on the PharmD degree. The curricular outcomes of a non-traditional PharmD degree program and an on-campus PharmD degree program are the same: to graduate, the learner or student needs to demonstrate all the competencies in order to demonstrate the outcomes. Successful academics are outstanding teachers, scholars, and service providers. Successful academics like to pursue new knowledge and possess superb library, writing, and presentation skills. The chapter concludes with some information on the rewards and satisfaction of pharmacy faculty members.
