ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the designer's role in development, implementation, and evolution of the flight deck instruments and how the designs relate to the pilot's existing, new, and evolving roles and responsibilities. It provides a brief overview of the history of flight deck design and relevant factors that influence design. The flight deck supports the three primary pilot task categories of Aviate, Navigate, and Communicate. The designer is creating a flight deck for an aircraft that can be operated under its own power across a wide range of environmental conditions. The default assumption about the minimum flight crew on a commercial airplane is that it consists of pilots. The chapter presents recommendations for design process and evaluation strategies, and a description of when and how new designs can be integrated into a flight deck. Designing for an aircraft flight deck is unlike design of most consumer products.
