ABSTRACT

Why share skills for the improved process?

You want everyone to be skilled at using the new idea/process

If your co-workers aren’t coached to do it the new way, they’ll go back to the old way in three days or fewer

The procedure isn’t “new and improved” unless every team member is doing it the new and improved way

Skill or habit? A skill is knowing how to do something. A skill isn’t useful until it’s a habit. A habit is something you do automatically, without having to think about it—like tying your shoelaces. Sometimes the new process doesn’t require a new skill, but to do the steps in a different sequence.

How to share skills:

Offer to show a co-worker the new skill

Pick a low-pressure time (when there isn’t a delivery/production deadline)

Plan to teach one small part of one skill at a time. Don’t talk your co-worker to death, SHOW him

Go to the place in your work area where this skill is used for the new process

Demonstrate the skill, slowly, talking through each step as you do it

As you co-worker to practice by doing the operation “hands-on” with her fingers

Give positive recognition to correct attempts to demonstrate the skill.

Acquire skills for yourself. The more skills you have, the more valuable you are on the job. You’ll increase your own value in the long run.
