ABSTRACT

One of the most important issues for termination involves helping clients locate other sources of size-acceptance support. Clients are coping with depressogenic life events unrelated to body image. Caregiving for elderly family members, family drug addiction, financial limitations, relationship conflicts, loneliness, and other stressors unrelated to body image were all issues raised in the pilot groups. Such stressors contribute to participants' pain, and yet the nature of treatment means there is little focus on them, especially in a group format. However, individual and self-help treatment modalities, although no data exist to support their efficacy, may be useful as well, and more practical for many applications than group treatment. In individual treatment (and guided self-help), the clinician must take special care to help the client facilitate a community of support around her self-acceptance. The issues clients face and the language that is appropriate to discuss their concerns varies for women of different sizes.
